Bathroom Shower Stall Leaking
Question:
I have a separate shower stall in the 2nd floor bathroom, and its over the living room. There was a leak over 10 years ago and at that time it was repaired leaving a big hole in the living room ceiling. It was ultimately repaired but now I can see a leak again. I ceased using the shower because I don't know who to call or trust to repair and repair it correctly. There is no trap door so a hole was knocked in the tile to repair. Others speculate that its the drain pan under the shower? Need help.
Answer:
Nine times out of ten - this will be a routine maintenance-type of repair. Where the walls meet the pan (base) of the shower floor - this needs to be caulked/grouted/sealed on a regular basis. If it lasted 10 years - it sounds like any handy man could re-caulk/re-grout/or re-seal this area and your problem should be solved. One time out of ten - it will be more complicated and MUCH more costly to fix. The pan could be cracked or faulty, the plastic membrane could be damaged, etc. There is no way to tell without tearing it out - and thus replacing with new. I would try the first very inexpensive alternative and see if it solves your problem. You can hire any handyman to do this kind of job. If this fails to solve your problem you can contact a professional.
