Removing Strips from Mobile Home Walls
Question:
We just moved into a mobile home a few months ago and I hate the walls. Some of them are panels and some are sheetrock with wall covering looking like stuff on it. Every piece is connected by a strip and I also do not like that. I would like to do away with them. Is there anything you could tell me to do? I would really like the strips gone and the walls painted.
Answer:
I've heard of people who, like you, hated the strips between the panels. Some have been quite happy with the finished appearance of their walls when they followed this process. Remove the strips and apply mud (drywall compound) to fill in the gaps. Once that is dry, sand it and the rest of the walls (100-grit paper), and vacuum all the dust off the walls. Apply a good quality latex primer to the entire wall and let it dry. Now it's your choice as to whether you want to paint your new wall or put up wallpaper. (If you're going to go the wall paper route make sure you apply 'wallpaper sizing" - available at home or paint stores, before papering). The primer should stop any 'burn through' of an underlying pattern.
